MABEE

Lester and Eloise

This is the outline that all of us have used for our family history homework for as long as anyone in the family can recall. Mom is working on the details of more info on different sides, but as far as I can tell, this is the Mabee side (mom's side) of the Kreutz line from our family.

Bear with me as this all makes little sense to me, I am just putting in what I have here as put together by Grandma Mabee (Eloise Brown-Mabee) I found so much fun stuff in our history, the page is MUCH bigger than I thought it would be! I have added links to the outside world as much as I could find. So I cannot take credit for all the hard work they have done.

In 1066, William the Bastard added the kingdom of England through the Norman Conquest. William spent the last months of his reign in Normandy, fighting a counter-offensive in the French Vexin territory against King Philip's annexation of outlying Normandy territory. Before his death on 9 September 1087, William divided his 'Anglo-Norman' state between his sons. The scene was set for centuries of expensive commitments by successive English monarchs to defend their inherited territories in France.

William bequeathed Normandy as he had promised to his eldest son Robert, despite their bitter differences (Robert had sided with his father's enemies in Normandy, and even wounded and defeated his father in a battle there in 1079). His son, William Rufus, was to succeed William as King of England, and the third remaining son, Henry, was left 5,000 pounds in silver.

Roisia's Cross is a cross in Royston, Hertfordshire, at the crossroads of Ermine Street and the Icknield Way (cum Ashwell Street).

Most likely it was in the southeast angle of the crossroads in the parish of Barkway. This was in the fee of the Lordship of Newsells. The first recorded owner was Eudo Dapifer, steward to William the Conqueror. Whether there was some monument predating this remains a matter for speculation. However, the footstone still exists. The 18-century antiquarian Reverend William Stukeley described it as:

A flatish stone, of very great bulk, with a square hole or mortaise, in the centre, wherein was let the foot of the upright stone or tenon, which was properly the cross.
